Per-minute
You buy a bundle of minutes. Go over and every extra minute costs $1.49 to $2.99 on PATLive’s live plans. Long-winded callers cost you money.

2026 PRICE GUIDE · 5 REAL PRICING PAGES
Most answering services charge by the minute or by the call, so the price on the website isn’t the price on your bill. Here’s what five of them actually charge, checked against their own pricing pages, and a meter that shows what your month would cost.
The short answer
An answering service costs $49 to $1,725 a month in 2026. Live receptionists start at $49 a month plus $2.99 a minute; for a small business taking 80 three-minute calls a month they run $429–$720+. Sameday AI, an AI receptionist, is $449 for 500 minutes. Most of them meter your minutes or calls.
Mabel is $275 a month, flat: no minute meter, no per-call charge, English and Spanish standard (or swap Spanish for any of 16 other languages).
THE METER
Slide in your calls and how long they run. Every line is a real price plan. Watch the minute-based ones climb while the flat one stays put.
That’s 240 minutes of talk time a month.
At 80 calls a month, Mabel is #1 of 5 on price. Every other price is from that company’s own pricing page, checked October 25, 2026, using its cheapest plan for your numbers. “+ overage” means you’re past that bundle and pay overage at a rate they don’t publish, so the real bill is higher. Live services answer every call around the clock; Mabel answers nights, weekends and the calls you can’t get to.
THREE WAYS TO GET BILLED
Per minute, per call or flat rate: every answering service uses one of these. Which one you’re on decides whether a busy month is good news or a bigger bill.
You buy a bundle of minutes. Go over and every extra minute costs $1.49 to $2.99 on PATLive’s live plans. Long-winded callers cost you money.
You pay for each call answered, often after a bundle. Short or long, every call counts.
One price, however many calls come in. A storm night costs the same as a slow Tuesday. Mabel is $275 a month this way.

AI VS. LIVE
AI receptionists are cheaper than live people because nobody is paid by the hour to sit by the phone. Of the plans we checked, Sameday AI starts at $449 for 500 minutes.
Cheaper do-it-yourself AI apps exist, where you write the instructions, keep them current and set up the forwarding. Mabel is set up for you instead: I write her instructions with you, set up your forwarding, test it, and change her answers when your business changes, at no charge.
Cheap plans exist. Here’s what the low price usually leaves out:
Do the math with your own numbers. Three missed calls a week, one in four of them a $350 job, is about $1,138 a month going to whoever answered. If you run Google Local Services Ads, Google’s own help page says a missed call during business hours is charged as a lead when the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds, voicemail included. You pay for that call whether anybody talks to the customer or not.
If you rarely miss a call, you don’t need any of this. If you do, the cheapest service is the one that answers.
MABEL: $275 A MONTH, AND THE METER NEVER RUNS
No minutes. No per-call charge. No overage. A one-time setup of $125 ($62.50 for the first 50 businesses), then $275 a month, month to month. English and Spanish come standard; swap Spanish for any of 16 other languages at no charge; a third language is included too. After every call she texts you the details and calls your phone to read them to you.
From the pricing pages we checked on October 25, 2026: live receptionist services start at $49 a month plus $2.99 a minute (PATLive) and run $164–$1,725 a month for 50–500 minutes (Abby Connect, Ruby). Sameday AI, an AI receptionist, is $449 for 500 minutes. Mabel is $275 a month flat.
For a small business taking about 80 calls a month at 3 minutes each (240 minutes), the live services we checked come to $429–$720+ a month, and Sameday AI to $449. The answer moves a lot with your call volume, which is why the calculator on this page lets you put in your own numbers.
Per-minute pricing is cheaper when you get very few calls. Flat-rate pricing is cheaper and easier to plan once you get a steady flow, because a busy month costs the same as a slow one. If you can’t predict your calls, or a storm or a busy season can double them, a flat rate protects you from a surprise bill.
Sameday AI, one of the AI receptionists we checked, starts at $449 for 500 minutes. Mabel is $275 a month flat, set up for you, with English and Spanish standard, or swap Spanish for any of 16 other languages.
Some AI receptionist apps start under $50 a month, but most are do-it-yourself: you write the instructions, set up the forwarding and keep it all current, and you pay for minutes or calls past a small limit. Mabel is $275 a month flat, and I set her up and keep her current for you.
It’s worth it when the calls you miss are worth more than the bill. If you miss three calls a week and one in four would have hired you for a $350 job, that’s about $1,138 a month walking to the next company, against a $275 bill. If you rarely miss a call, it probably isn’t worth it.
Watch for overage rates past your bundle, rounding up partial minutes, setup fees, and charges for extras like Spanish or call transfers. Ask every provider how a 30-second call and a 4-minute call are billed. Mabel has one one-time setup fee ($125, or $62.50 for the first 50 customers) and no per-minute or per-call charges. There are no add-ons: English and Spanish, a different second language, even a third language, all included.
