Starts at
$275/month flat

Why pick it: One flat price however busy the month gets. Set up, tested and changed for you by a person in Alabama. Texts and calls you after every call.

Watch for: She takes messages and flags urgent calls; she doesn’t book appointments into a calendar, quote prices or promise a time. She answers the calls you miss and the ones after hours, not every call all day.

Virtual receptionist checklist

  • Count your missed calls. Check your phone’s missed-call log for a normal week, especially nights and weekends. That number drives every price on this page. How much of your week is after hours →
  • Find out how you’re billed. Per minute, per call or flat. Then ask what happens the month you go over.
  • Ask who sets it up. A cheap plan you never finish setting up answers nobody.
  • Ask about Spanish. If any of your customers call in Spanish, find out whether it’s included. What a good bilingual answering service does →
  • Listen to a real call. Every service should let you hear one. Here’s Mabel’s.

Small business answering service FAQ

What is the best answering service for small businesses?

It depends on what you need. For live people: Ruby or PATLive. For an AI receptionist with big minute bundles: Sameday AI. For a flat price with the setup done for you, in English and Spanish (or English plus another language you choose), Mabel. Use the filter on this page to narrow it to your situation.

Is there a free AI answering service for small businesses?

Free and very cheap plans usually leave the setup to you, and you pay for calls or minutes past the limit. Mabel is $275 a month flat, and I set her up for you.

How do I choose an answering service?

Ask five questions: Is it live people or AI? How is it billed: minutes, calls or flat? What happens when I go over? Who sets it up and keeps it current? Is Spanish or another language included? Then put your real call count into a bill calculator before you sign.

Is an AI answering service as good as a live one?

For taking a message, getting a name and number, and flagging what’s urgent, a well-set-up AI receptionist does the job at a fraction of the cost. For complicated calls that need judgment, transfers or booking, live people still have the edge. Listen to a real call before you decide.
